Hearts Like Hannah’s is named after Hannah in the Bible. Our founder, Britni Julian, had a profound connection with her story in 1 Samuel chapter 1.
What struck Britni most was the earnest lament of Hannah in the sharing of her heart and emotions in her prayers to the Lord. Hannah knew what it was like to watch everybody around her have children, wondering when it would be her turn. Bearing a baby was significant in that culture, especially since God had told them to multiply.
Hannah was married to Elkanah, who loved her dearly and gave her a double portion of meat (1 Sam 1:5). But Elkanah had a second wife named Peninnah, who often taunted Hannah because of her barrenness, which resulted in Hannah weeping and not eating (1 Sam 1:7). Year after year, Hannah watched Peninnah and her husband Elkanah have children while she was still in the waiting.
We know God eventually gave her a baby boy, Samuel, but her motherhood journey was difficult.
